I gotta be honest with you guys,,,5th gear on a Savage isn't that hard to find as it follows 4th gear,,,(j/k) Actually, you should be able to tell just from the "feel" of going into the gear that you are in it. I have a 2003 Savage and it barely has 300 miles on it and 5th gear slides in very smoothly and doesn't take any "special" shifting procedure at all. As a matter of fact. I don't even need that gear until I get into the 55+ range and then when I do get into that gear it feels as if the RPM's have settled down at least by 1,000,,,which disturbs me because then it wants to run at about 65+ after,,,and that is a no-no when you are breaking it in. Maybe the newer models have worked out the old bugs as far as the 5th gear,,top end speed,,etc. I shudder to think what this beast will run like once I get it out of the break-in period as it runs like a bigger bike. Glad I didn't spend more money on a bigger bike when this things runs like a big dog and it's still a puppy.
